Sometimes it's very difficult to see a purpose in some of the tools, with Flickr it's obvious, with twitter less so. A lot of the eventual use comes form the mass of people using a tool - and how they use it.

I would find twitter an invauable tool, but it's unlikely that may of my non-techy friends or contacts would see the point enough - but they do the same thing with their Facebook status updates.

I think it can be about diving in to most things, after all you only lose a little bit of time if one turns out to be a dead end.

What I also see as important in getting involvedin social networking is purpose. Is it because your friends have an account at the same website? Is it because you want your band to be visible? The purpose and expectations imho defines the experience. Nice categorization!
